Why Shopify stores get slow

Shopify's hosting and CDN are fast. Stores get slow because of what gets added on top: a theme full of unused features, apps that each inject their own JavaScript, oversized images, third-party tags and web fonts that block rendering. Speed work is mostly subtraction.

What I measure

I look at Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (how quickly the main content appears), Interaction to Next Paint (how responsive the page feels) and Cumulative Layout Shift (how much things jump around). Real-visitor data comes first and lab tests second, because Google evaluates what real users experience and your customers feel the same thing.

The approach

Where the seconds go.

Audit and baseline

Real-user data and lab tests across your key templates (home, collection, product and cart) so we fix what actually hurts, in order of impact.

Theme and asset cleanup

Trim unused CSS and JavaScript, load images responsively, defer what isn't needed for first paint and fix layout shifts.

Apps and third parties

Review every installed app and tag: what it costs in load time, what it earns, and what can go or be replaced with a few lines of Liquid.

FAQs

Speed questions.

01Does site speed affect SEO?

Yes. Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal, and slow pages also lose shoppers before they ever buy. Speed is rarely the only reason a page ranks, but it's a reliable tie-breaker and a direct conversion lever.

02Will removing apps break my store?

Not if it is done properly. I review what each app actually does, test removals in a development theme first and replace functionality with lightweight code where it is worth it.

03Can you make my store fast without a redesign?

Often, yes. Several of the best results I have been part of, delivered with agency partners, came from scoped performance work on existing themes rather than full rebuilds.

04What speed score should I aim for?

Aim for passing real-user Core Web Vitals on your key templates, not a perfect lab score. A 100 in a test tool means little if real visitors still wait.
